How To Plan A Luxury Remote Holiday (And Stay Safe)
Planning a one-in-a-lifetime trip for you and your mates can be a bit tricky, but it’s made even harder if you want to go somewhere that’s in the middle of nowhere. While luxury vacations to hard-to-reach places are obviously possible, there are a few things you need to remember to ensure you’re prepared and stay safe.
It doesn’t matter how you get there: whether you drive, take the train, or use private jet travel, here are the most important factors to consider when planning a trip to a faraway destination.
Plan in Advance
While you should plan every vacation in advance, it’s a necessity if you’re planning a luxury remote getaway. High-end hotels and rooms are scarce, and therefore get booked up very quickly. The best option is to start planning at least a year in advance.
This will also ensure that you aren’t trying to find rooms when hotels bump their prices up, and you will often get the best deals too.
Look for Deals
Speaking of deals, try and plan your life around when the best deals are available. While this may be impossible for some, if you have the option, do it. An example would be saving your vacation days at work to travel during the off-season. You will usually find the best deals during this period, as most people don’t travel to the beach in winter or to the Alps in summer.
Unless you have specific plans that require hot beaches or snow-covered mountains, book off-season.
Package Tours
Package tours are one of the best ways to get excellent bang for your buck. While luxury package tours aren’t very common, they are out there, and doing the research to find them won’t take up too much of your time, and could save you a lot of money.
Package tours are also great if you’re traveling to a destination for the first time, as they ensure you get to experience the very best of the attractions and locations that the area has to offer.
Travel Insurance
When you’re traveling somewhere that is off the beaten track or is very hard to reach, you must be prepared for something to go wrong. Many luxury resorts are often just a few isolated villas scattered around an island, meaning that help might not be immediately at hand.
While the chances of something happening are very low, it’s a good idea to make certain that you and your friends are insured in case of an accident.
Understand Your Transport Options
While staying at a luxury hotel or villa is amazing, you aren’t going to spend every minute of the day in your room or at the pool. Traveling somewhere remote comes with its own set of issues regarding transportation.
Make yourself aware of all the transport options you have available. For example, is there a nearby bus route, or a regular ferry or boat? Also, find out if you need to book in advance or if you need tickets.
Hire a Vehicle
If there are limited transport options available, you might want to consider hiring a car for the duration of your vacation. While this is an added expense, it will ensure you always have a way to get around and get to wherever you need to be.
Having a car available is also necessary in the event of an emergency, especially if you’re in a more remote location where it would take emergency services too long to reach you.
Factor in Travel Time
Travel time is one thing that many people don’t take into consideration when planning remote luxury vacations. Once again, if you aren’t planning on spending all your time in your lodge or villa, you will want to see the sights.
Check Google Maps to see how close you are to the local restaurants, activities, shops, and other attractions. The last thing you want is to spend three, four or even five hours of your day on the road just trying to get to places.
Stay in Contact
Finally, make sure you always have some way to stay in contact. While your hotel or villa will have a phone, and you will most likely have a mobile, if you’re planning on going camping or something equally adventurous, you should have a satellite phone.
You should also make hotel staff aware if you are going on a remote excursion, and tell them what time to expect you back.
