Introducing The Savoy: American Bar Journal – A Tribute To Timeless Craftsmanship And Modern Innovation
Ape to Gentleman was recently invited to delve deep into the art of mixology, which has long been an integral part of The Savoy’s legacy. And more specifically, to the unveiling of The Savoy: American Bar Journal. Crafted by Head Bartender Chelsie Bailey and her exceptional team, this innovative cocktail menu will dazzle and delight patrons as it did us.
For over a century, The Savoy’s esteemed bartenders have served exquisite drinks and documented the essence of each day within the walls of the iconic American Bar. This tradition has now been immortalised in liquid form, giving birth to The Savoy: American Bar Journal. It’s a celebration of time-honoured bartending methods and a nod to the bar’s rich history, which has been an integral part of The Savoy experience since its inception.
The Savoy Cocktail Book
The menu design is a homage to The Savoy Cocktail Book, an iconic compendium of libations. Its simplicity is captivating, with each cocktail accompanied by an index that provides a glimpse into its inspiration. Infusing contemporary flair into classic concoctions, this menu also pays tribute to significant moments in time, encapsulating them in a sip-worthy experience that echoes the past, present, and future of bartending at The Savoy.
We rediscovered cocktails from eras gone by, revitalised with modern techniques and a fresh palate. The New York Cherub, a modern interpretation of the classic ‘Angel Wings’ cocktail, emerges as a harmonious blend of Rabbit Hole Rye Whiskey, Bowmore 15-Year-Old Whisky, Raspberry, Discarded Vermouth, Maraschino Liqueur, and Spiced Violette Bitters.
Meanwhile, historical tributes take new forms, as seen with the Coffee Black Velvet. This contemporary twist on the 1861 classic, created in honour of Prince Albert, boasts Guinness Coffee Whey, Crème De Cassis, and roasted barley, culminating in a drink of opulent depth and complexity.
Elevating the menu further are snapshots of the present, celebrating significant moments of today. Take, for instance, the Homecoming cocktail, a harmonious blend of Lion’s Botanical, Dry Vermouth, St. Germain Elderflower, and Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé. This creation toasts the Lionesses’ historic Euro 2022 victory and supports their endeavours in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Furthermore, The Savoy’s history is being written anew through cocktails that chronicle the tales of its diverse guests. The Fine & Fancy, a tribute to the charismatic Maggie, captures her spirit with a playful twist on her famed saying. This innovative potion combines whisky and ginger, a nod to Maggie’s favourite libation, with thyme, honey, Suze gentian, and Nyetimber Classic Cuvee, creating a sensory journey as enchanting as her presence.
ecoSPIRITS
In alignment with the bar’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, The American Bar team has collaborated with ecoSPIRITS. Employing a revolutionary closed-loop technology, ecoSPIRITS significantly reduces the carbon emissions footprint associated with cocktails, aligning with The Savoy’s dedication to responsible practices. Identifiable by a green tree symbol on the menu, these eco-conscious drinks promise a sip that’s delightful to the palate and gentle on the planet.
As the curtains rise on The Savoy: American Bar Journal, a symphony of flavours, history, and innovation unfurls. This menu invites you to savour the spirit of time-honoured craftsmanship and embrace the future of mixology, all within the elegant embrace of The Savoy’s legendary ambience. Join Ape to Gentleman in raising a glass (or two, responsibly) to the art of bartending, where every cocktail is a tribute to the moments that shape our world. Cheers to the past, the present, and the extraordinary journey that lies ahead.
